Since my health was troubling me at the time, I felt that I was not
up to the task of doing the fragmentation, sliverization and use of
copious amounts of different burls to achieve the original
background forest and wanted the bridge to be the main character.
The background
forest was created as the first marquetry piece. I selected the sky
using American Red Gum to achieve the affect I wanted then penciled
in the trees to just below their event horizon of the forest behind
the bridge. Cut these in using standard Marquetry practice and
select different veneers for the different trees.
I horizontally inverted the image as I felt that the traffic
approach to the eye looked nicer.
The two parts, the bridge and background were then fused together as
one, using the window method by taping the photo, which was now my
pattern, to the tree marquetry.
It was sanded with 120/600 grit then 5 coats of sanding sealer were
applied. Between each application the surface was sanded with 600
grit using a flat sanding block. It was finished with 3 coats of
Satin, wipe on polyurethane varnish and finally polished with
Renaissance wax. It is all Scalpel cut.
